Robert M Kirberger
BVSc DVSc MMedVet(Rad) DipECVDI Dip Tertiary Teaching, South African Veterinary Council and European certified specialist radiologist.
He is the founder of Vet Imaging Specialists which has been taken over by Christelle le Roux. He still is an active consulting radiologist with a particularly special interest in small animal radiology, ultrasound and CT.
Robert Kirberger obtained his BVSc degree in 1971 and then spent 16 years in private practice, mainly in the Highveld regions of Mpumalanga. In 1987 he returned to his alma mater and obtained his specialist radiology degree in 1991. In 1995 Robert was awarded diplomat status in the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging. In 2013 he was awarded a DVSc degree for his work on the Diagnostic Imaging aspects of Spirocerca lupi. Robert has been an academic stalwart in South Africa and but has now retired from the Veterinary Faculty at Onderstepoort having been there more than 30 years teaching and doing research in Diagnostic Imaging. Much of Robert’s knowledge is gained from research he has done personally on everyday imaging problems and he has authored or co-authored more than 110 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. He is also a co-author of Handbook of Small Animal Radiology and Ultrasound: Techniques and Differential Diagnoses. (2nd Ed Elsevier 2010) and is the senior editor of the 2nd edition of the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Musculoskeletal Imaging published in 2016. Robert is a regular speaker at national and international congresses and is the recipient of the SAVA clinical, research and President’s awards as well as being recognised as an exceptional academic achiever by the University of Pretoria in 2007. He has also been a National Research Foundation rated researcher for many years and has been a Faculty researcher of the year. Robert is the past president of the International Veterinary Radiology Association (IVRA).
